Many web designers are still, even today, creating sites without even thinking about SEO or are trying to link it in as an afterthought. SEO is an art/science in the sense that it takes many variables to be correctly positioned for it to work effectively. Generally including SEO into a site that has been badly designed is not only time consuming but often cannot produce the same results as a site built with SEO in mind. SEO is all done in the code of the site and involves many practices, one beiing putting 'keywords' in specific places. A site needs to be optimised for certain words and phrases and unless these are agreed between the client and the optimiser the SEO might be useless. It is imperative that the SEO specialist spends time with the client understanding the business and ensuring the site is optimised for the correct terms.
